First Time Living Alone Checklist

The Ultimate Check List for your First Apartment

August is the busiest month of moving! Especially for those who are off to college and moving into their first apartment or house! (GO CU BUFFS)
It can be difficult figuring out what you need to buy for school let alone your living, so we made a checklist for your move in! This way you can move in with subtle ease and allow your mind to focus on school! This checklist is everything you must have -- whether purchased, given, or found for cheap at a thrift store, you’ll need these items before you move in!

1. Mattress, bedding and pillows
The first thing worth your investment or time to get is a bed. You are going to be grinding all those gears and you need the best sleep you can (when you have time for it). Make those hours count and even invest in a mattress pad for even more comfort! Need inexpensive bedding? We get it! Check out Target’s cheap selection of bedding for every style.

2. First Aid Kit
Especially with these unprecedented times with the recent pandemic, make sure you are well equipped with a first aid kit, and a thermometer!
You don’t want to pass those nasty germs to your classmates! Remember Emerge-C is key to surviving the winter cold, flu and now Corona Virus.
Order your first kit and Emerge-C online!

3. Tool Kit
When you're living alone, taking things apart or putting them together can be hard without your parents tool box.
We recommend having a screwdriver, hammer and scissors for moving.
You might also want some hooks and nails for decorating and making your place really feel like home.
Amazon has some really cute colored tool boxes to make building even better!

4. Toilet Paper
The last thing you want is to run out of toilet paper while you're trying to rush out of the house to get to class on time. Make sure you buy plenty of toilet paper for your new bathrooms as soon as move-in day begins! It's one of those things you can make sure you never have enough of. Don’t be hoarder though, we all need some tee-pee too.
Did you know you can get toilet paper delivered to you through Who Gives a Crap so you never forget! (its also better for our planet and your bum!)

5. Cleaning Supplies
You will need cleaning supplies as soon as you move in because you may find spots and filth the previous tenants might have overlooked. (we make sure to hire a cleaning service before you move in) BUT you need to make sure you have all these before unpacking because you might make a mess or need to clean something before decorating.
Here is a good list of cleaning supplies you should have handy:
1. Swifter Mop
2. Vacuum
3. Multi-surface cleaning spray and wipes
4. Disinfectant spray (especially with CORONA)
5. Paper towels
6. Trash bags
7. Laundry detergent, stain remover, dryer sheets
8. Toilet scrubber and toilet bowl cleaning solution
9. Dish soap & if applicable dishwasher soap
10. Air freshener or candle
6. Kitchen Utensils
If sticking to take out or paper plates and cups is something you need to do before buying a whole dish set that's okay but there are some essentials you should have just in case. Plus not using paper plates or plastic red solo cups is a great way to reduce your carbon footprint!
Goodwill/thrift stores are a great place to find cheap and nice kitchen supplies. The dollar store also has dollar kitchen utensils! Perfect for those on a college budget!
1. Water glasses and mugs (coffee is essential in college)
2. Plates and bowls
3. Forks, knifes, and spoons
4. Frying pan, a pot for water and a cookie sheet
5. Toaster, microwave and blender (smoothies are a great way to get all the essentials you need for a day)
6. Food storage containers (zip-lock bags and tin foil)
7. Spatula
8. Knife
9. Pot holder
10. Cutting Board

7. Clothing Hangers
If you can’t afford a dresser right now we understand. Clothing hangers are way more affordable and can still keep your clothes off the ground. Especially living in Colorado you’re going to want to hang up your jackets after you get home so your floor isn't wet.
8. Batteries and extension Cords
As you start unpacking things, you'll notice you're going to need batteries and probably an extension cord. This way you can unpack, relax and watch TV or surf the internet, turn on some lights.. The thing you'll need energy and power for.
9. Spices and Pantry Essentials
You might not realize all the extra spices and cooking necessities you might need until you start cooking your first meal in your place and have nothing to cook with… or your food turns out tasteless. Let's make sure your kitchen is cooking worthy!
1. Salt & Pepper
2. Garlic powder/salt
3. Onion powder
4. Rosemary, oregano, thyme and bay leaves
5. Sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg
